Student Voice:

April 20th was the 20th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High and since the shooting in Parkland Florida, students across the country have been speaking up and organizing walkouts as a venue for student’s voice.

On Friday, the students at Hernando High organized a peaceful walkout to highlight their own cause. Led by juniors, Will Healis and Michael Kavanagh, their demonstration focused on unity.

“We want to unify students and bring people together. We believe that walking out as well as walking up will help prevent mass shootings in the future,” Kavanagh said.

“We want to do something that would really work and talk about how we can come together to become one body here,” Healis said. Keeping ourselves safe in schools is not just about banning a certain gun or who can buy them, it’s about taking care of each other.”

One of the solutions the Hernando High student leaders will start next year is a “We Dine Together” initiative to ensure no one is left out.

Well done, Leopards

Will Healis and Michael Kavanagh
