The preserve provides a rich mosaic of habitats including several miles of Weeki Wachee River frontage, portions of the Mud River, dense hardwood swamps, freshwater and saltwater marshes, and pine-covered sandhills. The preserve is best known for its Florida black bear population. The bears are shy, elusive and pose no threat to people, spending most of their time deep in the forest.
Alfred McKethan / Pine Island Park
There is only one public beach in Hernando County on the Gulf of Mexico. The beach is called Alfred McKethan/Pine Island Beach Park. The coast line of Hernando County is naturally saltwater marshes, so to get to the barrier islands requires crossing these salt marshes. There is a two and a half mile causeway that is dredged through the salt marshes that leads to the barrier island on which the beach is located.
The Alfred McKethan/Pine Island Beach Park is surrounded on three sides by water. The water gradually gets deeper so you can walk out quite a ways. During some tides you can wade to nearby islands.
The park abuts salt marshes which serve as an estuary for many animals. Small fish are plentiful and there are many blue crabs that scurry along bottom. There are also areas where there are sea grasses.
The three acre park has parking for a little over a hundred cars. Besides the beach, the park has a concession stand, restrooms, picnic tables, bbq grills, and a volleyball court. The park fills up quickly on a nice day, so if you would like to be assured of a place to park you have to arrive early. The park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m and parking costs $5.

Strong Tower Vineyard
Strong Tower Vineyard & Winery is an inspiration come true through years of planning and perseverance. Now a certified Florida Farm Winery, we have planted and grown three very carefully chosen grape varieties, from which all our wines are created. Each grape, chosen for it’s own unique flavors and characteristics, is encouraged to bring forth wine that is true to the grape. These selections consist of the prized and delicate smaller rich Norton (Cynthiana), the flavored sweetness of the Ison and Carlos Muscadines and when in season blueberry and sweet blueberry, strawberry & watermelon wines. You will enjoy your walk to the vineyard when you visit. You can smell the wine on the vines. We open for “U-Pick” in harvest season – a nice family outing, and the grapes are so delicious!
Truly estate grown and produced, all of the wines are processed from start in the vineyard earth to the finishing bottle labeled right here. They believe their small size and old world philosophy is instrumental in the best wines, natural and low in sulfites and the highest in resveratrol. You are always welcome to complimentary tasting in the winery and after sampling and making your purchases, they would be happy to show you through the processing room. Recent Gold, Double Gold and Silver medal awards were received from the eleven and twelfth Florida International Wine Competition. Whites, reds, blush and blueberry wines ranging from dry to sweeter.
